View this chart to learn more about what the numbers mean.

What the Numbers Mean
Understanding your readings is easy with the Omron 3 SERIES blood pressure monitor. The easy-to-read screen displays your readings in large font and labels each number with a tab along the side.
Systolic Pressure is the top number on the display. It's the pressure created as your heart contracts to pump blood throughout the body.

Diastolic Pressure is the bottom number on the display. It's the pressure between beats, when your heart relaxes.
These numbers combine to give you your blood pressure reading (systolic over diastolic pressure).
How to Monitor + Tips
Your blood pressure numbers often change. For instance, your blood pressure in the morning can be significantly different than at night, when you visit a doctor's office, or after exercising. By using an Omron blood pressure monitor at home, you're able to detect changes in your blood pressure any time you want.

Monitoring at Home is Easy
To ensure an accurate reading, do not measure your blood pressure within 30 minutes of:
Drinking Alcohol

Place the blood pressure arm cuff on your left arm and sit quietly for approximately five minutes with both feet flat on the floor. Then, when you are ready to test, simply press the start button and the Omron monitor will do the rest.

A Princess is Born

A Princess is Born

1:365 Days Project, 2007-03-10

On Saturday March 10th 2007, 2:41 PM, Danielle Jane Nicora was born in suite 10 at the Kadlec Medical Center. She was 7 lbs 4 oz. Shortly after she was born her pediatrician noticed a few minor problems. Her smallest and next smallest toes were fused, her foot and arm reflexes were slow and she had trouble maintaining her temperature. He had some blood cultures done and sent out a chromosomal test. By Sunday, signs of jaundice started to appear and it became more difficult for her to keep her temperature up. As it turned out, her blood oxygen saturation was below 90%, normally newborns are able to keep theirs at ~98%.

Later that night she was moved to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) where she was hooked up to monitors that watched her blood oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and heart rate. Her jaundice was getting worse as well. She tested coombs positive, which basically means that Carries O blood type had produced antibodies that were breaking down Dani's B blood type. So she was placed under bilirubin lights for photo treatment. We were told that more blood tests were done to check for possible infection, apparently her white blood cell count was very high. It was at this point the NICU nurse explained to us that they had identified numerous Down Syndrome markers. This news absolutely crushed us, like nothing else has ever before.

We spent the next day in the hospital fighting through shock and grief all the while visiting Dani whenever we could to hold and feed her. It was later that day the results came back with a positive result for Down Syndrome. Luckily by Wednesday she had made huge advancements in her health, her jaundice started to clear up, she was regulating temperature and had maintained a blood oxygen saturation of ~96%. It had also given us some time to start to deal Dani's condition. We are home and things are looking up. And although the news we got feels tragic, Dani was born and there should be a celebration for this, shes healthy and starting her journey in this world. We have no doubt she will become the best she can be with what she was given and all of us could use support and encouragement as we begin to make decisions that will chart her course.

So, Carrie and I present to you, Danielle Jane Nicora

Baby Ella - born on Christmas morning

Baby Ella - born on Christmas morning

Here's a wonderful surprise - a beautiful baby girl born on Christmas morning. With three older brothers, she's a welcome addition to our family.

Ella Marie was quite impatient and decided that she wanted to spend no time in labor. As a result, she was born at home - quickly - with Daddy delivering her with an assist from the 911 operator. The State Police and EMTs showed up after Ella was safely resting on Mommy's belly.

We had already summoned Mommy's obstetrician to the hospital - she wondered where we were. When she heard that a mother and newborn were en route with the EMS, she said that she uttered an expletive.

Ella's due date was the 28th, so she was barely early. In fact, based on the prior three, we thought she was late! She's 21" long and weighed in at 9 lbs 12 3/4 oz. She'll need all of that and then some to keep up with her three older brothers.

Omron HEM-432C Manual Inflation Blood Pressure Monitor

Omron HEM 432C Digital Blood Pressure Monitor-Manual Inflation

Taking your blood pressure is easy with the lightweight and convenient Omron HEM-432C Manual Inflation Blood Pressure Monitor . This monitor comes equipped with a standard adult-sized cuff that fits arms nine-to-13 inches in circumference. Simply wrap the cuff around your arm and squeeze the bulb to begin inflation. In a few seconds your blood pressure and pulse readings are displayed on the large digital panel. Omron's monitors are clinically proven for accuracy so you can use the HEM-432C to track your blood pressure and pulse progress as your work towards a healthier lifestyle.

The Omron HEM-432C delivers accurate, clinically-proven blood pressure readings in the comfort of your own home.

To take an accurate reading, first position the marker so it is centered on the inside of your arm and aligned with your middle finger.

Next, place your arm on a table so the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart.
Instructions for Manual Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors
There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a blue marker; position this marker so it is centered on the inside of your arm and aligned with your middle finger. Next, secure the cuff with the closure strip. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm.
Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, begin inflating the cuff by rapidly squeezing the inflation bulb until you have reached approximately 30-40 mmHg higher than your normal systolic reading. If your normal systolic blood pressure reading is unknown, inflate the cuff to 180 mmHg (never inflate higher than 299 mmHg). When the desired pressure has been achieved, release the inflation bulb. Once inflation stops, the measurement is started. As the cuff deflates, decreasing numbers will appear on the display. When the measurement is complete the Heartbeat symbol stops flashing and your blood pressure and pulse rates are displayed on the screen. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure.
The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring
Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including:

White-Coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor's office but lower at home
Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor's office but higher at home
Morning Hypertension: blood pressure reading is higher in the morning
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, medications, and stress. So having your blood pressure monitored at a pharmacy with an in-store device after you've been shopping or walking around might not provide you with the most accurate measurement. Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you achieve a relaxed state more easily, and it gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your measurements over time. This can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication.
