Storybook Hollow Mural

Storybook Hollow Mural

This is the mural I designed for the baby's room. There is a sign on the road that says "Storybook Hollow" and if you look closely you will see Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Maid Marian, The Princess and the frog, a fisherbear, and two girls standing on the bridge and a swing. All in Teddy bear form, and of course birds and a cottage a la Snow white in the background.

This is the design concept for our baby's nursery. The vines go around the crib. The grass-line is at about window-sill level.

Pip eats his first greens. I started out pulling grass for him and dandilion leaves. I will add clover and blackberry leaves as well as hay.

Pip is still drinking milk 2-3 times a day. Transitioning from milk to solid foods is a dangerous time for baby bunnies, especially if they are separated from their mother prior to their eyes opening.

Adult rabbits produce a type of dropping that they reingest (think of a cow chewing its cud) and it is thought that the babies eat their mother's cecotropes or "night droppings" after their eyes open and that helps them establish the "gut flora" they will need to digest solid foods.

What often happens is that the babies develop a usually fatal diarrhea during this period. If nothing else the babies should be given "probiotics" before starting solid foods. "Benebac" is available at most pet stores, but you can also try probiotics sold for human use such as "acidophillus". The best thing is to try and get some cecotropes from a healthy adult rabbit and we just happened to have two netherland dwarfs. So I made poor Fluffy wear an elizabethan collar at night so she would leave her cecotropes in the tray rather than eating them. I first mixed some in Pip's formula when he didn't seem interested in eating them (yuck), but then I started leaving some in his box and he ate them, or they dissapeared anyway.

Cecotropes look more like a blackberry than the regular droppings.
